Begin with the product information

A catalogue website has two audiences: the customer looking for an item and the staff member responsible for keeping that item accurate. Designing only the public pages leaves half the problem unresolved.

In the Trans Tech Trading project, the rebuild included a React catalogue and a custom administration interface, with product management, SEO tools and PDF handling. That combination is a useful starting point for planning a catalogue: the public information and the update process both need attention.

Make categories match how customers search

The internal naming system is not always the language a customer uses. Review a sample of real enquiries and identify the information people need to distinguish products. Categories, product names and technical attributes should help that decision.

Avoid building filters just because they look impressive. A filter is useful only when the underlying data is complete and consistent. If half the catalogue lacks a specification, data cleanup may need to come before a filtering interface.

Treat documents as part of the product

Technical sheets and PDFs often carry information that cannot fit into a short description. Decide how documents are uploaded, named, replaced and connected to products. Consider what happens when a document becomes outdated or applies to several items.

The public experience also matters: a download should have a clear label and make sense on a phone. Important descriptive information should remain available in the page itself instead of existing only inside a file.

Design the update workflow

Walk through creating a product, updating its image, changing a document and removing an obsolete listing. Decide which fields are required and what should happen if content is incomplete.

An administration screen should make common changes straightforward and risky actions deliberate. The best editor is not necessarily the one with the most controls. It is the one that fits the people maintaining the catalogue.

Carry useful URLs forward

Before replacing an existing platform, inventory its product and category URLs. Map useful pages to their replacements and plan permanent redirects where addresses change. Check internal links, document links and canonical URLs after the migration.

A framework change alone does not guarantee search visibility or better performance. The finished system still needs readable HTML, useful descriptions, suitable images and testing. A catalogue rebuild succeeds when customers can find the right information and the business can keep it current.
